We may be living in an era of medical miracles, but when it comes to sepsis, we’ve got a long way to go. It’s the most expensive condition in the U.S. healthcare system, with a human and financial cost that’s mind-boggling to me.

The staggering cost of sepsis, (read The Cost of Sepsis infographic) the alarming mortality rate, and high number of sepsis-related readmissions are reminders that hospitals have a long way to go in managing this dangerous, complex, and frighteningly common condition. Early detection and treatment are crucial, but all too often misdiagnosis and delayed treatment lead to complications and worse.
