Recently, our own Mark Johnson helped co-write a blog post featured in the HIMSS resources library, focused on the rising value of patient-generated health data (PGHD).

The blog post analyzes the emerging value from PGHD, and how to implement a set of standards that devices and systems for PGHD must be built upon.

As more and more of us look beyond Meaningful Use to engage patients, and look to invest in products driven toward this goal, it will become important for us to analyze the ROI and “so-what” of these products.

Where does your organization stand? Are you waiting to see how the ROI from these tools can be measured? Are you concerned about potential risks of sharing PGHD?

If you have these concerns, you’re not alone. Many of our customers have expressed a hesitancy to get started with PGHD.

Given the range of devices, software and systems available, including wearables and health trackers, now is the best time to start this type of analysis, instead of sitting back and waiting for the “perfect” PGHD application to come along.

For those wanting to get started, here are a few tips and suggestions:

  • Consider remote monitoring programs that utilize your existing applications.
  • Look for applications that focus on an intuitive user experience.
  • Focus on a few target metrics where ROI can be measured. The examples Mark cites in his blog post are specific types of data that can improve patient outcomes.
  • Look for applications that serve as a hub, or single point of contact for your patients.
