For the third post in our Connectivity Series, I’d like to share with you some details about integrating Welch Allyn devices with your EHR.
Many of Welch Allyn’s monitors are portable, wireless devices that operate in a low-acuity setting. If you’re a clinician or a biomed expert, you understand exactly what that implies: Portable devices function differently than the stationary, continuous monitors typically found in critical care areas like the ICU. And the workflow associated with portable low-acuity devices can be unique, too.
Overcoming Those Differences
Continuous monitors are typically hard-wired to a computer network. Welch Allyn portable, low-acuity monitors, on the other hand, are not. So, we typically connect directly to each device. You may ask, how can Iatric Systems do that? And your IT folks may ask, isn’t the data that comes out of Welch Allyn monitors proprietary?
Great questions!
Here’s the answer. Two years ago, Iatric Systems and Welch Allyn formed a partnership that enables direct connectivity between Welch Allyn monitors and Accelero Connect, Iatric Systems medical device integration solution. Through our partnership with Welch Allyn, clinicians can collect vital signs data, validate it, and send confirmed results to any EHR system.
I’ll share these and other details about our Welch Allyn partnership solution at an online webcast demonstration of Accelero Connect on May 25, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. ET.

Our partnership solution also supports point-of-care barcode scanning at the Welch Allyn device to confirm positive patient identification in the EHR system.
Making Headlines
Today, several hospitals and health systems benefit from our Welch Allyn alliance. Halifax Regional Medical Center in Roanoke Rapids, NC, was the first site to go live with the solution. Their story has been featured in the following online publications:
The long and the short of these stories is that Halifax reduced errors, and their nurses save 5-10 minutes per patient every two hours when they round to take vitals.

Among other products, Welch Allyn also offers continuous monitoring systems and central stations. And as you can probably guess, there are many ways in which to integrate Welch Allyn equipment with your hospital’s EHR.
