You’ve probably heard the common saying, “if you can’t measure it, you can’t improve it.” This quote is credited to Peter Drucker, the man who invented modern business, and while he probably didn’t anticipate it to resonate specifically within the healthcare industry, it does.
The widespread adoption of electronic health records (EHRs) has given healthcare organizations the ability to collect and leverage large amounts of data. With this information, you gain the ability to uncover patterns and trends to create holistic views of patients, personalized treatments, improve communication and enhance health outcomes. Specifically, clinical data can directly improve patient outcomes with the ability to use data to track infection control, bed management, antibiotic stewardship, and other risk factors.
Today’s challenges surrounding COVID-19 also present a new way for clinicians to leverage their data to track COVID-19 efforts from patient test results to tracking and employee contact tracing.
Aggregated data gives organizations the opportunity to make smart, quick patient decisions. Yet, most healthcare departments struggle to devise a clear approach for integrating data analytics into their regular operations. Most departments – especially clinical and pharmacy – lack the resources to consolidate data into one location and struggle to find time to make sense of the numbers to turn into action.
Take a minute to think about how you’re currently leveraging the data you collect – are there areas where your data could tell your clinicians a story about their patients? Is your pharmacy team able to take all of the info about your patients and make the most connections to avoid risky prescribing? How do you know if your hospital could make better use of your data? In short, data is just a bunch of numbers until you have resources to turn those numbers into valuable insights.
