Give Patients A Voice: Implement a Patient Advisory Board

Written by Cindy Paul, Consultant, Professional Services

Better patient experience and engagement

As we head toward the future of value-based care, a focus on patient engagement and experience becomes even more important — much more important than just checking the box for Meaningful Use. According to a recent Healthcare Finance article: “Patients are expecting the organization to deliver on its promises and are watching and judging at each touch point.”

For many hospitals, “how” they are going to address this shift in what patients are focused on remains difficult to nail down. A key step toward improving patient satisfaction and the overall patient experience is to create your own patient advisory board.

Patient advisory boards are a great way to get patients involved and let their voices be heard. By tapping into patients and their experiences, you’ll gain the following:

  • Insight into new tech and communication protocols that patients are hoping to see in the future
  • Ways to improve patient satisfaction
  • An improved understanding of optimal patient/caregiver interaction

In order to create a patient advisory board, follow these simple

Step 1: Identify an area of focus Identify an area of focus: by narrowing your scope, you’ll get the right participants and actionable feedback on your key area.
Step 2: Ask staff members for help Ask staff members for help: share the advisory board’s feedback with your providers. Many will have long-standing patients and be able to offer recommendations on whom to invite.
STEP 3: Reach out to dissatisfied patients Reach out to dissatisfied patients: Beyond those patients who sing your praises, it’s important to engage patients who have brought up concerns (or even complaints). You’ll get more diverse feedback and more direct feedback about areas that need improvement.

The steps outlined above will guide you toward building a strong, focused patient advisory board to fill gaps in care and improve your patients’ experience.
