Connectivity Series: GE Medical Devices

Today I’ll focus on GE. With GE devices, there are multiple integration methods to understand in order to ensure you leverage your equipment in the best possible way to meet your medical device integration needs.

Connect GE Devices to Your EHR  

Now, on to the core points of my post:

Many GE devices — CARESCAPE modular monitors, DashTM and SolarTM patient monitors, and ApexProTM Telemetry, for example — will require you to have the GE CARESCAPE Gateway in place. The CARESCAPE gateway enables bi-directional data transfer to and from these proprietary GE devices. Working directly with GE, and with oversight from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) at annual IHE Connectathon events, Iatric Systems has validated connectivity with CARESCAPE networked data, and has developed messaging, nomenclatures, etc., to allow for a robust, industry-standard integration of that data into your EHR.

Hanover Hospital of Hanover, Pennsylvania, uses Accelero Connect to pass vitals from their GE B450, B650, Dash 4000, and Solar 8000 monitors into the hospital’s MEDITECH Client Server EHR. Direct connection
GE currently manufactures one device, the GE B40 monitor, which is fully network addressable. This means your facility can use a medical device integration solution such as Accelero Connect to communicate directly between GE B40 devices and your EHR without the need for the GE CARESCAPE Gateway.  

Serial connection
The following GE solutions can be interfaced only in a serial networking fashion:

  • Aisys Carestation
  • Avance Carestation
  • Engstrom Carestation

These device types require serial connectivity and the use of a 3rd party serial to TCP/IP server component to effectively communicate data from the devices to your EHR using a medical device integration solution.
